Silk weight "Momme"
Momme is a Japanese measurement unit, which describes the weight of silk. The “Momme”-weight is labelled with “mm” and is not equal to the measurement unit “millimeter”. One “Momme” equals about 4,31 g per square meter of woven silk fabric.
Quality of silk
The weight indicates the quality of silk. The higher the “Momme”-weight, the denser the fabric, and the higher the number of strings used. Silk with a high “Momme”-weight is of high quality, durable and robust.

What kinds of silk are there?
In general, it is to say that the higher the “Momme”-weight, more strings are being used and therefore the fabric becomes denser.
Depending on the “Momme”-weight fabric types and range of accommodations can be differentiated:
soft, fine, consistent in form, shiny, opaque e. g. for underwear and nightwear
matt/sandy, fine, light, fluttering, and transparent tissue, e. g. for blouses, scarves and curtains
shiny, smooth, dimensionally stable, wrinkle free, drapable, opaque, e. g. for curtains, customs, dresses and table cloths
extremely fine, very light, transparent, e. g. for bed canopy, and Curtains
half transparent, light, seersucker, e. g. for scarfs and dresses
shiny, fine, smooth, soft e. g. for lingerie, summer clothes and silk painting
transparent, fine, stiff, e. g. for ruffles, undergarments, scarfs
Of course, there are also silk fabrics with a higher “Momme”-weight. For example for the production of bed clothes silk of 25 mm is being used. The reason for that is that this fabric is even more robust, durable, and longlasting. These silk fabrics are of high quality but due to its thickness not suitable for the production of scrunchies.
What is the best "Momme"-weight for scrunchies?
We only choose high-quality silk. Silk must be strong so that the stability of the scrunchies is provided and does not show any signs of wear even when used daily.
Highly relevant for the production of the fine hair accessories is that silk is smooth and easy to sew around an elastic band. A fabric type with a high “Momme-weight would influence these aspects negatively.
Our silk scrunchies have a very dense fabric with a “Momme”-weight of 22. It is extremely soft, hard-wearing, durable, and due to the flexibility of its fibres very gentle to your hair.
